Buying gear in Squamish / Vancouver?

Post by Mattias S » Tue Jul 08, 2008 2:54 pm

Hi

I'm going to Squamish for 3 weeks in august.

And I thought I'd buy some new gear since it's alot cheaper than in Sweden, where I'm from.

This is what I'm interested in:

Metolius master cams.
BD C3s.
Large BD camalots (like #4, 5 & 6) or similar WC friends.
Aliens.
DMM Phantom biners, also the colored ones.
DMM wallnuts and WC rocks.
Original RP's, the australian ones.

Is there any price difference between buying in Vancouver or Squamish?
What climbing stores in the area carry the products mentioned above?
What stores would you recommend?

Would be awsome if someone have time to answer this.

Happy climbing!
/Mattias

Climb on

Post by bradley3297 » Tue Jul 08, 2008 3:52 pm

Climb on in squamish sells pretty much all of that at a comparable price to vancouver. the only thing youll save money on in vancouver is ropes and shoes mostly.

Climb On has just about everything on your list. You won't find Aliens in the city. We don't have RP's but we do have Metolious Astro nuts which are almost identical. The prices are the same as the city. Check the website climbonsquamish.com.

How do Canadian prices compare to the US?

Canada may be the cheapest place to buy climbing gear in the world IMO.

mec has most things on your list but the aliens. they also have package deals now - if you buy a whole set of passive pros, you get 10% off or if you buy 6 of the same quickdraws, you also get 10% off.

you can check out their at www.mec.ca

aliens sometimes fall apart. i do not trust them, personally.

master cams, tcus, and zero cams are more trustworthy options

if you're in vancouver, go straight to MEC. if you're in squamish, climb-on is good. climb-on is small but probably has a better selection of bigwall-type stuff. MEC is like a big climbing department store so it's a fun place to go shop (and leave lots of money behind ;).

not sure about climb-on's prices but they're probably pretty close to MEC's and they've got great prices, especially on black diamond gear (compared to buying in the US).

And Climb-On in Squamish is owned and run locally, by hard working climbers who do alot for the climbing community both route-setting and access wise, and is a great place to hang out and meet the locals, check out the "new route" book, and get beta from guys who have climbed everything.
