I'm looking to take a couple of friends to hit the snow to help them practice basic mountaineering skills- using crampons, self-arrest, snow anchors, etc. Can anybody advise a good place to do this near Whistler/Squamish/Pemberton? Mainly looking for a short approach from a trailhead to snow, any snowfield will do- doesn't have to be big or steep. Don't really want to buy lift tickets at Whistler for this!

what is your 'mountaineering' definition of a short approach?
7-days is long and less than 6 hours is short, right?

if you go to joffre lakes, i guess you could go up to the matier glacier by heading up beside the icefall (on the left), but it's kinda a pain in the a$%. alternatively, you could go up cerise creek and go play on the anniversary glacier. but at this time of year, a lot of stuff is pretty icy....

Wait till Dec..
Or,
Grab a MTB ride up as far as you can to Sky Pilot and work on skillz there.. No slots to worry about, a bit of blue ice and enough snow to practise. 8-9 hr day includes riding/hiking and 2-3hrs training return.
