I'd like some offwidth skills

Post by Reeve » Wed May 28, 2014 2:09 pm

Hi everyone, I'm coming from the UK to climb in Squamish for about 4 weeks in August - September (can't wait!)

Like most Brits (excluding Tom R and Pete W, obvs), I can't really climb wide cracks. So I'd like to learn... I was wondering if you could help me by putting together a Squamish off-width progression list.
We've got the Squamish Select guide. Anything else which isn't obvious that you think we should know about climbing in Squamish would be good knowledge too.

Thanks a lot, Reeve

First, good on you.

Off the top of my head:

Vector - good intro

Then the wide climbs at Octopus' Garden

Then Split Beaver

Pipeline

Boogie till you puke (or poop)

I'm sure I'm missing a lot. But that's a start.

March of the Kitchen Utensils

Bop til You Drop

Split Beaver

Tantalus Crack

Hypertension

Scimitar

Boogie til You Puke

Pipeline

If you manage to tick all those while you're here, and still cruisin for a bruisin, Public Image is the holy grail as far as I'm concerned. It's probably the most obvious line that's not on the Grand Wall side of the Chief.

There is also at least one up at Top Shelf now. The FA had yet to be done towards the end of last year though. Perhaps it has been cleaned and sent by now?

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I've looked them all up in the guide and added them to the to-do list. They look brutally great! Although my girlfriend who I'll be climbing with is now cursing you all

Reeve, good to hear of a fellow British climber chasing wide cracks. I'm heading up from WA for a few days in Squamish this week (6th-8th Aug) and am bringing a few big cams ;) I'll be staying at the chief campground, let me know if your girlfriend is fed up of losing skin as I'd love to get on a few of the aforementioned wide cracks!
