Bouldering in Squamish info

Post by Jan » Sun Jul 21, 2013 12:15 pm

Hello,
We are planning to do bouldering trip Squamish in August and i'm looking for some info. I read that most of climbers stay at the Stawamus Chief Provincial campground and that lots of boulders are around the campground. Do you think that is necesary to have a car? Are there other bouldering/sport climbing areas which are not in walk distance?

We will arrive by a plane (from Czech Republic :D ) and we will have a problem with a crash pad. I've found two shops in squamish which do rent crash pads but it is too expensive 70 or 80CAD/week . We would like to stay more then two weeks and I think it could be better to buy the new crash pads and sell them at the end of the trip. Do you think that is possible? Anyway could anyone know about the shop where to buy the crash pad in Vancouver or are the prices same in Squamish?

I'm looking forward to Squamish
Thanks for the answers

Jan

Jan welcome to Squamish and Squamishclimbing.com

You can probably get away without a car in Squamish. There is a lot bouldering to do at the base of the Chief, enough to occupy two weeks easily. The walk into town is about forty minutes so people find it convenient to have bicycles. They can be rented in town.

I highly recommend you get the Squamish BoulderingGuide 2nd Edition. It is excellent. The layout makes it very easy to find the boulders and there is a lot of useful info in there for visiting climbers. Check out this free sample, Marc Bourdon posted on the quickdraw website:

The climbing shops in Squamish are fairly competitively priced with the MEC prices in Vancouver. I have seen people sell crash pads on the forum here. It does not seem to be a problem.

Hopefully others here will chip in with more advice. Good luck and happy climbing, you are going to love Squamish and the bouldering.

If you are looking for a good deal on a crash pad let me know. A friend left his near new metolius crash pad at my house last summer and has now asked me to sell it. I believe he's looking to sell it for $100. I am sure after your trip you could sell it for the same price assuming you didn't destroy it.

Hi Dave and A-Rat,

Dave thank you for the information. They are really useful for me.

A-Rat , that would be great if sold me the crash pad. :D I dont know how to manage it only. I will arrive to Vancouver on friday 9. August 20:30. We could meet at stawamus chief campground on Saturday 10 or in Vancouver or My friend Lubos will arrive two day before me. He could do the business with you as well :D
Please write which option will be best for you.

Thanks
Jan
