How is the climbing in early May?

Post by breerockies » Thu Mar 28, 2013 8:29 am

Hidey Hoe Neighbours!

I'm making a trip out to the coast late April/early May. I was planning on a solo bike tour, but realized I am in the best climbing shape of my life and perhaps should reorganize my trip for "higher" goals (especially since my biking legs have disappeared over the winter). Is it dry enough in early May to climb Squamish? Would anyone be interested in a 5-day stretch of climbing? I lead sport 5.9+/5.10-, and can follow up an 11. I have a descent sport rack and a 70m rope. I haven't led trad in years, but would be happy to clean. My climbing priorities are 1) safety, 2) fun, 3) climbing hard and learning from other climbers.

Info and interest would be great!

Cheers,

Bree, the Albertan stranded in Ontario

Hi bree,
Early May is always a gamble, it may be pouring everyday or it may be beautiful and 17 degrees. But if you decide to come, I am based in Vancouver, have no car, have a small rack (my husband has the rest of it with him oversees) and am keen to climb during the week (and for 5 days straight). I have a job online and I do not expect any work that week.

I have been climbing for 18 years, love trad and lead 5.8 but might be able to pull off a 5.10a, depending on the day and the climb, as I am just coming off a shoulder injury. There are also great sport areas to go to. I am also not adverse to climbing in the rain as I love being outside.

My wife and I will be in Squamish around the same time, also trying to gamble for some good climbing weather. Planning on being in Squamish 5/5-5/8. We did most of our climbing in Arizona, leading sport up to 5.10s. Unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you look at it, we moved to Hawaii for our jobs, where climbing is dismal. Our lead goals for the trip obviously won't be as lofty as they once were, but we plan to have a lot of fun back on the rock.

We'll be bringing a 70m rope, draws, and anchor set ups. We always like meeting and hanging out with fellow climbers.
