A few days left to pre-order Squamish Select

Post by squamish climber » Tue Jun 12, 2012 2:03 pm

I was in contact with Marc Bourdon the other day about his guidebook because I was really jonesing to get my hands on a copy. It’s been quite a wait (about 7 years since the last guidebook came out) and I could only imagine how many new routes and crags would be in the latest edition.

Well I got the answer on that one. The 2nd Edition of Squamish Select had 1019 climbs, not including boulder problems. This 3rd Edtion has 1541 climbs. That’s over 500 new additions.

New areas listed for the first time in a guidebook include: : Gonzales Creek (a sport wall), Olesen Creek (Wire Tap zone), Klootch Buttress (Slhanay) major new developments in Smoke Bluffs Park such as Lumber Land and Funarama Fern Hill, Area 44, Chuck Chuck Creek, Cat Lake and many new crags at Chek.

The book is all colour, even the photos which is a big change over the previous edition and will make it even easier to navigate from the guide. I couldn’t believe when Marc said he took over 13, 000 photos and whittled that down to 600 for the book, which also gives a clue to how much work he put into the project. Marc says it took “about a year at least” to shoot, compile and write the guide.

Check out Sonnie Trotter’s great blurb about Squamish Select at his blog

And here is a screen shot:

What are people most looking forward to in the new guide?

Order your copy from the link above -- that would make squamishclimbing.com look great and Marc happy.

I'm looking forward to getting my copy!

I've preordered and am mostly-patiently awaiting its arrival in my mailbox.

The fact that it has been a typically rainy early-June helps ... sorta.

Definitely some quality photography in this book.

The climbing areas are colour coded in the guide:

I called Valhalla on friday and they said the books should be in stock next week. Something about the shipment from the factory being mixed up.

I ordered my copy of the new Select book through squamishclimbing.com and can't wait to receive it. Also, I'd like to thank Marc for the excellent work (and community service) he does by hosting so many topos on quickdrawpulbications.com - thanks!

I think Marc did an amazing job with his new guidebook. It is so clear and easy to parse the topos and route diagrams. Super nice photography all over it. Stellar work. A couple of the grades in there seems questionable by a letter grade but who cares.
Mercury Vapour - 10a, it was 10d in McLane's guide
Local Boys 11a, 10d in McLane's

Maybe they are typos.

Mercury Vapor was rated 10d for the original start. The newer, more popular, and easier variation is 10a.

There will always be grade discrepancies here and there by a letter. At least there are far fewer differences between grades on photos and on descriptions.

What's with Butt Lite? Really? It's Buttface and it allways will be. I can't wait till someone asks me about the "Butt Lite" :)
