SAS AGM October 23/11

Post by squamish climber » Tue Oct 18, 2011 10:52 pm

Plan to attend this if there is even a remote chance you can make it, this meeting is one of more important gatherings where the Squamish climbing community comes together to talk about issues and potential solutions regarding access and protecting our climbing resources. Their announcement which I've posted below mentions one item on the agenda will be the Best Practices Guide for Rock Climbing and Route Development for Squamish Area Parks. I haven't seen an agenda but I think there are a lot of important issues including this one to discuss. I can't recall in fact a year like this when there are so many things coming up that could impact climbing in Squamish such as:
- the Gondola proposal, that will pass through Stawamus Park between the Chief and Shannon Falls.
- the potential for the Zip and other lower tier climbs inthe Smoke Bluffs to be closed off to climbers because they are on private property or access is through private property
- the latest property development proposal for the Upper Blind Channel which includes a National Climbing Centre
- the lack of progress by Squamish to purchase the Smoke Bluffs bench lands from the FMBC, leaving the integrity of Smoke Bluffs Park in jeopardy.

The above three are closely linked in my opinion

- a civic election that may or may not bring in a council prepared to deal with these issues
- and last but not least, phase two of the Rebolting Initiative.

Post up if you disagree or think there is an issue not listed here.

Kind of heavy but hey did I mention these meetings are also a lot fun. It's a chance to catch up and shoot the breeze with fellow climbers. And the door prizes are awesome.
