Planning a trip to Squamish this spring? Well when you come don't
forget to bring a sack of nuts and hangers. Apparently Robin Barely,
local legend, Squamsih resident and prolific area route developer has
decided to remove all the anchors and hangers from all of his routes
in the Smoke Bluffs.
Quote: Smoke Bluffs Park advisory committee.
Climbers please note: Robin Barley advises that he is removing all his
climbs from the Bluffs. At this time hangers and anchors have been
removed from his climbs at Bug house , Ronin' Corner, Funorama and
Pink Cliff . The bolts have not been chopped as previously reported.
Went for a walk in the bluffs today and had a look for my self. Sure
enough, the hangers and anchors are gone?!!
For those who don't know, Robin Barely is western Canada's most
prolific route developer. If you're ever climbed in Squamish or Skaha
you've undoubtedly climbed his routes. I have no idea why he's
decided to erase his efforts from the bluffs, but if I had to guess I
think it's because of the flack he's gotten from the local climbing
community regarding his recent use of fixed gear in the form of home
made glue in staples. In addition to his use of Ajax Bleach on his
new routes on the Squaw and Bughouse Heights. The bleaching of the
walls at Bughouse was teetering on the ridiculous if you ask me. With
out a hint of hyperbole, you can see the lines on the Bughouse from
the Apron parking lot, and you can see the lines on the Squaw from
space! I'll be sure to keep you all informed as more info comes in.
