Squam. pioneer and Smoke Bluff land owner, John Drenka dies

Post by squamish climber » Mon Mar 26, 2012 8:20 am

Squamish legend John Drenka died March 19th. He was 95.  He lived a life well lived and full of hard work. It could be said he and his business partner, Pat Brennan built this town. They started Squamish Mills logging company. For more on his generous contributions to the community and his impact read the obit in the Squamish Chief . The Squamish Reporter also did a fine interview with him last year.

I mention his passing here because he owns two lots at the bottom of the Smoke Bluffs bordering the municipal park. The famous  and favourite climb the Zip is located on his property. No trespassing signs were erected last year at the entrance to this crag. The property is also tied up with what to do with Upper Mamquam Blind Channel. There is a dream by many to make this a new gateway to Smoke Bluffs Park.

Let's hope climbing access issues can be resolved on the Drenka property and Smoke Bluffs park gets the entrance and profile it deserves.
