Spring climbing

Post by nancy86 » Tue Mar 20, 2012 1:52 pm

Hi,

Can someone let me know if climbing the Chief or surroundings is good at this time of the year?

Is it dry and warm enough?

Thank you!

Is it good this time of year? No. For example it was snowing yesterday in the greater Vancouver area. You can find areas dry enough to climb however the selection of climbs are limited. Bouldering is a safer bet as when the weather breaks they tend to dry faster.

Right now the highs are 9c which is pretty chilly for climbing. doable but cold on the fingers. May is a safer bet and July -early october is the prime climbing time.

We do occasionally get decent breaks in the wet weather this time of year, but its not the norm. There are several cragging objectives that are doable within a few hours of the sun coming out. If you're going to be in the area anyway for work or something, then for sure throw in your shoes and a bit of gear, but don't come here this time of year specifically for the climbing. You will likely be shut down.
