Big-Wall Rats, Wild Local Skiers, Paddlers, Top Female Climbers and Films Illuminate the 12th Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival, February 20-28, 2009

Vancouver – Mark your calendars! An incredible mix of local and international world class climbers, skiers, paddlers and outdoor activists will come together at this year’s Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival (VIMFF), February 20-28, 2009. The showcase promises to thrill audiences with live stories and films of adventure from all over the world. With presentations from disabled outdoor activists, big wall explorers, rock climbers, backcountry skiers, mountain bikers and wild river paddlers, this year’s festival will leave the crowd speechless. The 12th annual VIMFF will showcase the talents of those that dare to push the limits of climbing and exploration with those that wish to preserve our precious mountain environment. Complete festival information can be found at www.vimff.org.

This year’s line-up of guest speakers are once again the celebrities and backyard heroes of mountaineering, climbing, skiing and mountain biking. Warren Macdonald is an Australian environmentalist, explorer, mountain climber and writer now living in BC. He became the first double above-knee amputee to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa's tallest peak. Margo Talbot is a wild ice climber from Western Canada whose favourite medium is ice and alpine. She has traveled and climbed extensively, from the High Arctic to Antarctica, and if you want to meet a woman who ran with the wolves – here’s your chance. Majka Burhardt will share her stories from a journey to Northern Ethiopia where she led a team of women to climb desert sandstone towers. This was an effort to get to know another side of a complex country with an international reputation largely limited to drought, famine, and communism. Sílvia Vidal is an unparalleled big wall climber from Barcelona, Spain, renowned for soloing the biggest granite faces in the world and often spending more than 20 days climbing. Alex Huber hails from Germany and is known as one of the best and most versatile climbers of the modern era, excelling on short rock routes, solos with no rope, big wall climbs and speed climbing world records. There will also be world-class kayakers, skiers and mountain bikers who will come to VIMFF to inspire with their stories of survival, adventure and achievement.

The Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival (VIMFF) has been bringing films, multimedia shows and special events on mountain sports and mountain culture to Vancouver since 1998. Over the years, VIMFF has established itself as one of the key cultural events in Vancouver.
