i think the idea is that since MEC is a not-for-profit company, once they've used their sales money to cover their overhead costs, they allocate the remainder of the money to the shareholders based on how much each person has spent. so to join MEC you buy one share and then at the end of the year, they split up the excess funds by using the money to buy you additional shares. the more you spend, the more shares they give you. every so often, they buy those share back off of you.. hence the cheque in the mail...

Just to add to what c-plus has said. This year they want to bring owners (us) back down to 35 shares. So the number of shares I had minus 35 is the number of shares that they paid me out. That difference plus everyone elses excess shares gave them the total number of shares they were going to split the extra revenues up into. So xxxx number shares divided by the excess revenue equals the amount per share.

How does one accumulate shares? Buy lots of stuff from MEC. I've been a member for 11yrs and this is my first year that I received a cheque. Granted it has only been in the last 7 yrs that I've been buying a lot of stuff.
