Leaving gear in tent @ base of The Chief campground

Post by can_climber » Thu Jun 15, 2006 11:07 am

Hello,

I will be visiting Squamish (not for the first time), in late July. This will be the first time I show up there without a car. I was curious if you folks have been safe leaving your rack in your tent?

Last time I was at the chief campground, there was not nearly enough bear lockers to store your rack/food in.

What is the general trend among climbers travelling to Squamish, with respect to where you keep your gear when you are not climbing...and when you are out climbing but don't need the whole rack?

Thanks.

I would hide the gear under your sleeping bag. I also put a luggage lock, small key lock, through the 2 zippers of the screen door of the tent. That is if you have two zippers on yours. I have never encountered a problem doing this. Locks keep honest people honest! But if a theif wants your gear, it doesnt matter if it is in a car or a tent!!!

Thanks,

Your comment about the sleeping bag makes me think of the seinfeld observation about going swimming. When you get changed and stuff your wallet in your shoe. You push it all the way to the toe. "The thief will never think of looking in the toe, just check the heel and move on."

But really, thanks. I was talking to friend who goes out every summer, and he says there is real respect in the campground, and the gear would be fine in the tent. I like to hear your corroborating input.

Well if you throw a small lock on the tent door and someone looks in and sees nothing then they may just move on! Better then giving them the oppertunity to rifle through all of your belongings!

Everybody knows that theives dont check the toe of the shoe!

Murray at Valhalla Pure has some lockers in the back of the store and he will let you store gear in them if you ask nice and donate to the bolt fund, I think.

Chain the whole thing to a tree or something.

Thanks again.

I was worried about breakins. I know that cars have been getting busted into up at the squaw for a long time now. I am sad to see it extending to the base of the apron.

Do they ebay the stolen gear? I dont get who would buy this stuff. Of course, I know they are also taking cash/credit cards.

thanks.
