What I don't understand is why don't these people just "spit" out the rope when they fall. I don't know about you all, but when I'm pitching off a route.... everything slows down.

me and (from this site) aaron or (from rc.com) stave2gravity saw a dude dashing off who ripped his thumb off, while in chek....i'm guessing it happened while he was clipping (there were still about 6 draws up a route i assumed he fell on)

ya...SPIT OUT THE ROPE EH!!!!...i guess somepeople tense up, i typicly grab the rope close to my harness to help keep me up right or if i'm on slab i'll keep my hands out to stabilize myself...
Nothing like the sound of thumpin' a piton first thing in the morning...

One time at smith I heard some friends mention that a guy bit the rope and lost his teeth the week before.

I don't use my teeth on the rope, just my lips if I really have to. That way, I cant rip out my teeth. ;)
