Overnight Rockfall!

A large amount of rock cut loose off the Chief about 5:00 am this morning (during the torrential overnight rainfall). One of the gullies is the likely culprit, but if anyone has more info, post it here. It sounded like it came from the vicinity of the North Walls...

Holy Cow! Was this activity loud enough to wake you up @ home or perhaps that you up there on the portaledge with the yellow fly on the badge.

Will sure be intesting to find out where the fall occured..

From what I saw up on the Chief a couple days ago, I think it was very likely to have been the pillar that broke off the top of the North-North Gully's southern side, at the very top, just 100m from the North Summit trail. The scar is still raw, pale yellow, and nasty-looking. The scar is about 25-30 metres high, 4-6 metres wide, and judging from the rock to the sides, it would have been pillar-like, 2-3 metres thick. A large tree that was sitting on top of it is still there, the root hanging out like an umbrella over nothing. It must tally to around 500 tons or more, most of which would have gone halfway down the gully. Enough to wake Valleycliffe, that's for sure.
