Camping at the Malamute

Post by podclimber » Tue Jul 06, 2010 6:26 am

Wondering what the community consensus was on the topic. Seems like a potentially delicate issue.

Cheers.

You should read this thread from last year.

http://www.squamishclimbing.com/squamis ... te+camping

I think it's safe to say that the community is almost entirely opposed to Malamute camping.

thanks for the link/thread. This is good info for my non-climbing friends.

There was a tent pitched on the Squamish-facing side of the Malamute on Sunday July 18th, a 'real' tent - not Canadian Tire style. There were also some fire rings and garbage within 50 m, though it was unclear if there was any connection.

I saw three tent pitched there on Saturday when climbing on the Apron. Fire rings! - Not a really smart idea given the Extreme fire hazard. Idiots. This is a sure fire way to close down the Malamute forever. And possibly the rest of Squamish.

There are dirtbags camping all over the Malmute again! Don't they know there is tonnes of free camping everywhere. Someone with some authority should go up and tell them to stop risking that climbing resource for us. Some no camping signs might also help?

perhaps a well-constructed no climbing sign on the main access, with a concise description of the access issues at hand? noone likes no camping signs they perceive are there "for no reason", maybe if they have some background info.... and if that doesn't work, then a little note tacked on saying what happened to the guys who camped there last summer.

People with authority to send up there (some random ideas):
Kevin McLane and Jeremy Frimer on a combined peace-keeping mission
Tami Knight in one of her 80's outfits
...

step number 2

Post by al pine » Thu Jul 29, 2010 12:00 pm

It seems someone has posted no camping signs up there, so they are being ignored. I stopped by for a chat with the squatters but no one was home (not that would do anything as I'm no authority)

Next time I'm up there if no one is home again, I thought about re-locating some of their climbing gear to the lost-and-found Climb-on, along with a note telling the dirt bags they'll need to explain why they are threatening access to us all to get their gear back.

Other ideas?

Sounds pretty confrontational Alpine. Not that complaining about it on the internet like the rest of us is really helping anything, but I must admit I wouldn't like it if someone replaced my climbing gear. I'm trying to think of something valuable and constructive to say in this post but the only thing that comes to mind is pooping in front of their tent.
