Across the highway (east) from Totem Hall... tacky as hell.

I read somewhere else (i think on his blog cynical sunshine) that the district of Squamish was approached repeatedly by BC Lotto about putting in a slot casino, and when they repeatedly said no, eventually was given an ultimatum; either take the deal, make some profit and have some control over the thing, or we give it to Squamish Nation, you get no profit, and no control. Shitty deal. So, I just finished the last council meeting for a month. A shorter one (only13 hours). It was a very long day but since it’s Summer I’ll keep this somewhat briefand only discuss two things. First, you should sit down… are you sitting down? I’m serious; this willmost likely upset you. Or at least it upset me. Let me begin by stating how lucky I consider myself to be in a community sharedwith Squamish Nation. Since we share a community it’s always delicate when onedoes something that will affect the other. On Tuesday, Squamish Nation came toour council chambers to let us know their plans for a giant digital billboard atthe entrance to town (across from Totem Hall near where the casino is going). Myfirst question was, “are you looking for input?” I (and everyone else) wastold, “it’s a done deal”. After that my heart sank and I was literallyspeechless. Since they didn’t even have to tell us, it is with all sincerity that Iappreciate the heads up. That and it is the Squamish Nation so you have to bedelicate what you say since they were here first. But it’s because I have suchrespect for the Squamish Nation I feel obliged to say how I truly feel. I think ‘emotional’ sums it up. For starters, it would have been nice tohave some input. Especially knowing that the community of Squamish wants nothingto do with billboards mostly due to the unflattering image they project upon theplace that has them. Right or wrong those are my feelings which are understandable since it’salways difficult for a community leader to be told our shared community isgetting something whether we like it or not.

I thought the Squamish Nations were one of the richest First Nations around? WTF is an extra 150k going to go towards? (wait, I already know the answer to that)The sign could bring in more than $150,000 a year for the band

I vote for the Gondola AND via ferrata up the middle of the apron as well as bolt ladders on anything harder than .9, if they're putting up a big sign.
