Slesse - Glacier Conditions
Re: Slesse - Glacier Conditions
We were there on Sunday Aug 17 and were able to cross behind most of the remains of the glacier, though some mid-fifth slabs and a V0 boulder problem were needed. It would have been really bad to fall on any of this stuff.
There was still some ice in the back of the cirque. We made a mad dash one at a time to get across the upper cirque to safe ground - maybe 15 seconds or so. This part didn't seem too bad. We climbed the NE buttress and heard ice blocks falling throughout the day, and some of them sounded quite large.
We did the crossover pass descent, and though ridiculously long, it was easy to follow. The lower part into and through the trees was well trodden and extremely well marked. At times you could see 5 blazes at one time.
The approach trail is not in the same place as described in Alpine Select, but instead is maybe 2km farther up the road. The road seems quite rough to me, though we saw a Toyota Yaris at the trailhead.

My brother loved climbing here! Takes some experience though for sure, little daring for my taste.
