New Moderate Cliff - Murrin Park. Valley of the Lost Tribe

Post by smallman » Sat May 11, 2013 7:40 am

Hi All:
Springtime brings on "spring cleaning" and this spring myself and Kevin Henshaw were busy scrubbing a new cliff around the corner from the Commonwealth called The Valley of the Lost tribe. Here is the topo link: http://www.quickdrawpublications.com/Fr ... loads.html

Enjoy,

Chris Small

Thanks for all the hard work Chris!

PS, I've seen occasional references to two new areas: "the longhouse" and "top shelf". anybody willing to divulge where these are or are they still in development?

I'm not sure if the cat is being let out of the bag yet in regards to either the Top Shelf or the Longhouse. Harassing some locals may get you an escort up there, but information is still somewhat guarded. Googling it will give you a few teasers like this one: http://squamishclimbingsource.com/2013/ ... sh-update/

They are spectacular. It will be worth the wait!

Hey Kris,

Thanks for the update. I saw that blog recently and together with some previous posts it got me wondering what the state of those two crags was. Seemed like a fair bit of route development had occurred, but little in the way of topos had made its way into the public realm. Might have to go on an exploratory hike to go see what treasures are being unearthed.

Hi Chris:

I didn't see a topo for the Valley of the Lost Tribe, just for the Commonwealth, when I click on that link. Looking forward to checking it out when available. Thanks for your hard work.

Hmmm. When I just clicked the link it was working. The topo is just under the Commonwealth topo. But here it is again. http://www.quickdrawpublications.com/Fr ... 0Tribe.pdf

We had a lot of fun at this crag yesterday climbing the noodles, dog and squirrel and a couple others. Great texture to the rock and generally well worth a visit for some high-quality mellow cragging.

Thanks for your efforts Chris!

Kory Fawcett and I had fun adding a new route to Valley of the Lost Tribe crag yesterday. "Whipping the Cat" (3 bolts and gears) begins on the arete left of "50 Lashes with a Wet Noodle" and right of "A Game of Cat and Mouse". "Whipping the Cat" begins with a very cool boulder problem on the arete (protected by 2 bolts) that leads to a small roof encounter where it joins "A Game of Cat and Mouse" for crack climbing to an arete finish past another bolt. "Whipping the Cat" can be seen well on both images of the Valley of the Lost Tribe topo between routes labeled 3 and 4.

I'm not too sure on the grade as I haven't been climbing much lately and have lost a bit of perspective on grades. If you climb it please let us know your opinion. I'm guessing 11+/12- range but could be way off.

Nice job, Jack and Kory. It didn't take you very long to finish that. Maybe you guys should look at the OPEN project between Sad Noodle and The Flying spaghetti Monster. Looks pretty thin.

Thanks, Chris. You were right when I mentioned it to you... it is harder than it looks. Tricky boulder problem. The move over the lip and finish of "A Game of Cat and Mouse" sure is nice.

Good work guys, both these crags provide some awesome climbing, I thoroughly enjoyed my day there!

Did think that 'A game of Dog and Squirrel' was exceptionally tough for the grade though. I haven't been shut down so badly on a route of this grade in a while, and I thought this suited my style! Anyone share a similar experience?... my ego has taken a beating! An incredible route none the less though!

Didn't feel like 11a to me either.

Kory Fawcett and I put in another new route just around the corner from The Valley of the Lost Tribe the other day. You get to it by going up the little ramp on the right hand side of the crag and then you continue right just before the top of the fixed line. It's a left leaning finger crack in a corner that leads to a transition to a juggy face past 2 bolts. We named it after Kory's new favourite snack, "Bacon Jerky", and guess it's about 10a? (might be off on that, go give it a try and let me know).

Jack.
