Smoke Bluff Park Committee FYI

Post by Peter » Tue Jul 10, 2007 8:37 pm

To All Smoke Bluff Park Users & Residents in the Vicinity of Smoke Bluff
Park:

The Squamish Smoke Bluff Park Committee is writing to introduce
itself and inform you about present projects within the park.

The committee was struck, by an act of Council, to assist our
city council and municipal staff in the development and management of
Smoke Bluffs Park. The committee is composed of representatives from a
variety of user groups that have traditionally used the area for
recreation: climbers, hikers, mountain bikers, motorized trials bike
riders, trail runners, members of the public at large, a city councilor,
and the Municipal Director of Parks & Recreation. Members of the
committee are appointed for a two year term but serve at the pleasure of
Council.

Priorities for the Smoke Bluffs Park Committee include improving
the trail network within the park, improving signage and ensuring that
past recreational pursuits within the park can continue. At present,
trail construction is occurring along the East Loop Trail in the south
east corner of the park and some vegetation management is occurring
along the nearby bluffs. In order to allow more light onto some of the
cliffs, some trees, mainly alder, will be removed. The added light
should help prevent moss growth on specific rock climbs and improve
access to these routes. This work is scheduled to take place during
periods of inclement weather over the course of the summer. Other
initiatives that will be taken include recleaning older routes that have
fallen into disuse and renewing or installing suitable anchors at the
tops of routes that at present do not have anchor stations. As is the
tradition in the climbing community, most work done on climbing routes
is done by volunteers. As park users we can all help by cleaning up
after ourselves (or others if need be), using the outhouse facilities
provided, and keeping the noise level down near residential areas.

Remember, this is our park and we can all play a role in
preserving and enhancing it for future generations. If you have any
questions or concerns for our Smoke Bluffs Park Committee, please
contact Bob Kusch, Municipal Director of Parks and Recreation, bkusch(at)squamish.ca, (604) 898-6886.

.

Sincerely Yours,
The Smoke Bluffs Park Committee

That does not fall under the committee's mandate.

That's been done already - check out Nubile Woman and Burgers and Fries south for some good examples. Many trees that are impacting climbs at these areas and others have been removed this season under the direction of the Smoke Bluffs Ctte.
