Marble Canyon

Marble Canyon

Find it on the Squamish Climbing Map (Click Here)

Marble Canyon is an amazing valley cut through massive limestone cliffs. It separates the Clear Range (to the south) from the Marble Range (on the north), and is located between Lillooet and Cache Creek.

The cliffs are popular with climbers and have routes up to 18 pitches long. There are three lakes in the canyon, the largest of which (Pavilion Lake) has bizarre 'fresh water coral reefs' formed by apparently unique bacteria, which occur no where else in the world, or so it is said. The site is in the process of becoming a UN World Heritage Site.

The Main Wall of Marble Canyon rises 800m from the lakeshore and is home to the demanding 17 pitch, 5.10d A0 route "The Yellow Brick Road", as well as the famous "Pavilion Edge" and others. The relevant climbing guidebook is "Central BC Rock", by Lyle Knight. Strangely enough, the rock is not marble at all, but beautiful crystalline limestone.

In winter, Marble Canyon is visited by a few ice fishermen and many ice climbers who come to sample the beautiful and accessible frozen waterfalls. In particular "Icy BC" (3 pitches WI 5) is perhaps the most popular waterfall ice climb west of the Rocky Mountains.
