Dropped my ATC Guide Midway Up Calculus Crack

Post by Khoi » Sun Jul 13, 2008 4:58 pm

OY!

This is not what I had in mind for my first post here!

We were climbing Calculus Crack on the North Apron of the Stawamus Chief today. Just got to the top of the first pitch after Baseline Ledge when I accidently dropped my belay device.

If anyone finds a relatively new (it has very few scrapes on it) ATC Guide in that forest of trees and boulders on the way to Calculus Crack, or St. Vitus' Dance, or South Arete, it's most likely mine.

Thanks!

it'll be pretty banged up now!

and why would you want it back? have you asked your partner (whom which you will be belaying w/ this ATC) if they want [you to have it] back??

i'm almost sure they will object to your belaying them w/ it. i know i would... :P

good luck w/ the find :?

On Saturday, while climbing Powaaqatsi, we also saw a guidebook (from Rock On) and what was apparently a cam and quickdraw (from Calculus) get dropped into the gully. Spent about 10 minutes searching on the way out but couldn't find anything. However, it would seem there's enough booty in the gully that you might just find more than an ATC if you went searching.

I don't intend to continue using it for outdoor climbing. If I get it back, it'll be regulated for gym use.

I am currently using my old ATC to belay until the Reverso 3's arrive at MEC.

So from your post, the reliability/safety of the ATC doesnt matter cause it will be used in the gym? I guess the gym really is a safehaven!
When in doubt....run it out!!!!

It does matter.

Obviously I would do a visual inspection of it. Given that I wasn't that high up AND I watched it slide down the slab, I think there is a good chance that it could still be usable. I wouldn't feel comfortable using it outside, but I would be OK using it in the gym, where all the routes are not high and single pitch.
