Safe Climbing Partner Needed!
Hi there!
In two weeks I'm moving to Vancouver for 2 and a half months. I'll be a Visiting Scholar at UBC. I'm an avid climber but I've got precious little experience climbing outside. This is partially because I've lived in Iowa and Minnesota since I learned to climb (~3 years ago) and partially because I can never find myself with enough money to get started climbing outside by taking classes or buying my own gear. I've also lived a rather itinerant lifestyle since I learned to climb, going from school to school and doing internships (I'm a grad student).
When I'm in Vancouver this summer, it will be the first time I live really near to any decent climbing and I'm absolutely dying to get climbing outside. So tired of the gym. Luckily, my summer gig at UBC gives me the opportunity to take advantage of some really really wonderful wilderness.
But there's a problem! Though I've climbed in gyms for a while, I've only ever bouldered outside and that was only one time. So, when it comes to sport or trad, I'm a newb. Plain and simple. I know basic things about sport leading like don't back-clip and don't z clip, but I've only done it indoors and I know that doesn't count for much in terms of experience.
So… ehhh... I'm looking for a climbing partner that would be willing to spend a few days introducing me to climbing outside. I realize this isn't the most attractive proposal for your average British Columbian 5.13c crusher (which I am sure that you all are), but maybe you find it gratifying to teach enthusiastic people new things, or maybe you want to just take an easy day on the rock and meet someone new!
While I am a newb, I at least realize that and there are still some things I can offer, such as…
1. Engaging dialogue regarding social issues, particularly those social issues related to biomedical ethics and neuroscience.
2. Thoughts on culture in various regions of the United States.
3. Many many belays.
4. Free drives to the crag in my well-maintained (read: messy) Honda Civic.
5. Conversations about the merits of various types of bicycles for various types of application.
6. Enthusiasm for climbing.
7. Cautiousness in most respects.
8. Thoughtful conversation about the things you're interested in.
9. Also, hey, I'm a grad student. Right? So, I must be at least a little bit responsible and quick to learn. While I may not be able to get a ton of experience climbing outside, I think I can learn how not to be an idiot pretty quickly. At least enough to keep you safe.
Hmm. I guess that's about all I can offer. Another thing to mention is that I'm just at the tail end of recovery from a pulley injury (stupid crimpy boulders!) and I prrrroooobably wouldn't want to get on anything much harder than 5.9 for a least a week or two so that I can test things out and see how I feel. That said, when I'm in good health I boulder around V4/V5 and 5.10/11ish **in the gym**. Hopefully we could find some places to climb that would be comfortable and fun for both of us!
I look forward to hearing from you!

Re: Safe Climbing Partner Needed!
Hi !
If you have not already been inundated with parnters, I'd like to climb with you.
I'm available for single days with a bit of notice. also have July 2,3,4 available.
I'm not crushing any 5.13's or even 10+ but been climbing for years (read safe)
so could get you oriented to Squamish - and once you're bored on 8's and 9's you can hook up with someone harder.
Have all the gear, ropes, car etc.
Cheers
Matt
