Stawamus Chief - 2006 Peregrine Falcon Closure

Post by Anders Ourom » Tue May 30, 2006 10:17 pm

B.C. Parks informs us that the peregrine falcons are nesting in the vicinity of Millenium Falcon as usual.

The climbing closure of this area of the Stawamus Chief will be through the end of July. All routes from Negro Lesbian to Freeway are closed, from four pitches above the ground to the top. Closed routes include Clean Corner, Sports Illustrated, Cloudburst, Sea of Tranquility, Getting Down in the Brown, Warriors of the Wasteland, Western Dihedral (4th ptich and above), Negro Lesbian, Crap Crags, Slow Duck, Illusion, Planet Caravan, and Millenium Falcon. New routes are not allowed in this zone. Open climbs included Arrowroute, Cleaning the Brain, Deadend Dihedral, Time Passages, Black Dyke, Western Dihedral (to the top of the 4th pitch), Rutabaga, Sticky Fingers, Slow Dyke, and Freeway.

Signs have been posted at the Park. There is more information on the B.C. Parks website, and updates will be posted there - http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explor ... sitoralert

If you observe the falcons, please contact B.C. Parks at (604) 898-3678, extension 234 - note location, time and activity observed.

The Access Society received confirmation today from B.C. Parks that the peregrines have successfully fledged (two chicks), and the voluntary closure of the Western Dihedrals area is ended.

Thanks to everyone for their help with this.

Anders Ourom (Executive Director)

ps The raven nesting closure, at Petrifying Wall near Murrin Provincial Park, ended in early July. The birds had nested at the top of Pleasant Pheasant.
