Raven Nest - Petrifying Wall, Squamish

Post by Anders Ourom » Tue May 30, 2006 9:46 pm

A pair of ravens is nesting on Petrifying Wall, very near the belay anchors for Pleasant Pheasant. B.C. Parks has asked the Access Society to publicize the following information.

Attention Climbers

There is an occupied raven's nest above Pleasant Pheasant on Petrifying Wall. Please avoid climbing the following routes: Elastic Man, Pleasant Pheasant, Family Ties, Air B.C., Air B.C. Direct, and Black Water.

The ravens are extremely territorial, and will defend their nest. This voluntary closure is for the safety of both climbers and the ravens.

We do not know how long the closure will last, but suspect mid-July or later. We'll post more information as it becomes available, and there may be signage at Murrin Park.

surely, finding Blackwater in dry condition could be considered an "extenuatiing circumstance" in any court of public opinion!

Ravens' nest at Pet Wall

Post by pitted_date » Fri Jun 23, 2006 8:10 am

The ravens have abandoned the nest at the Pet Wall and signs that BC Parks had posted have been taken down. There are no closures to report of in Murrin Park but the closures due to the peregrine falcons are still in place on the Chief. Those closures include all routes between Freeway and Negro Lesbian. You are permitted to climb up to three pitches from the base on routes such as Rutabaga, Deadend Dihedral, etc.

B.C. Parks has informed the Access Society that the raven's nest closure at Petrifying Wall, near Murrin Park, ended on June 22nd. Chris Gooliaff, senior ranger, advises that "the ravens are gone from their nest next to Pleasant Pheasant so the signs indicating voluntary route closures have been removed. I was notified that there were no ravens flying in the area for several days in a row by many climbers, so I confirmed it by observing the area and looking into the nest to find it had been abandoned."

The peregrine falcon closure at the Stawamus Chief continues, and more information will be posted when available.

Excellent! I was there a few weeks ago and was hoping to get on those routes but couldn't. :)

The Access Society received confirmation today from B.C. Parks that the peregrines have successfully fledged (two chicks), and the voluntary closure of the Western Dihedrals area is ended.

Thanks to everyone for their help with this.

ps The raven nesting closure, at Petrifying Wall near Murrin Provincial Park, ended in early July. The birds had nested at the top of Pleasant Pheasant.
