Sports climbing in Squamish

Post by ahan88 » Thu Feb 27, 2014 12:18 pm

Hi, I am hoping to get some time in the Squamish area this summer. Can you sports climb the Grand Wall of the Stawamus Chief? Are there books or websites that I can refer to for climbing routers (pitch counts, difficulty level, map, etc)?

Cheers

Welcome to Squamish and Squamish Climbing. Multi-pitch sport routes are very rare in Squamish but don't let that deter you too much. Many a sport climber has gotten hooked on Squamish trad climbing. The Grand Wall is 5.10 AO.

The best sport climbing is north of Squamish at Cheakumus, most are single pitch, however one of the longest sport routes was put up last summer. Check out Centurion 6 pitches, 5.10c.

There is also good, steep sport climbing at Petrifying Wall, in Squamish. Your best bet is to get the new Squamish Select by Quickdraw publications (see the banner ad above). It's an excellent guidebook of most of the quality sport and trad climbs in Squamish. You can also do some research on mountainproject.com

There is also some moderate sport climbing at Area 44, and its recent expansion, The Pillary.

The 2 spots are adjacent to each other and are situated between downtown Squamish and Cheakamus.
