sanctuary access

Post by gearheart » Tue Mar 22, 2005 7:25 pm

There has been lots of logging done near to the Sanctuary and the access trail (near where the old "Woodlot closed" sign was) has been closed recently during the falling. I haven't looked this week to see if the access trail is open again or what effect the cutting may have had on the trail to the crag, but don't expect it to look like it did last fall (or even last month) when it is open again. I'll try to check it out this weekend and post an update.

I was up there a week and a half ago and I have done some research since then. They are falling some trees in and along the main trail as well as along the cutblocks to allow for some hydro lines to go through. They have also cut a "swath" through the trees about halfway up the access trail to the Sanctuary. The trail is fine, one log kind of in the way. They have sort of closed the main biking trail off but you can just walk up the gravel road a bit and then cut back in. When we were there they were chopping well to the north-east. From what I can tell from the municipal maps, the crag is on crown land.

They appear to have finished the falling in the area now. Now just a very open path/skidder trail all the way from the houses north to the Forest Service Road. May be harder to find the access trail in to the crag since all of the landmarks in the forest are now gone. I didn't see the old tape and there is generally lots of slash on that side. So expect a few extra minutes to locate the trail, but should be fine to the crag once you do.
