The SAS annual general meeting is coming up this Sunday, 7pm at the Garabaldi Room in the Howe Sound Inn and Brewpub.

You may have noticed this issue about climbers camping beside the Stawamus River and leaving behind their garbage has got me lamenting the apathy and narcissism that seems to be prevailing in the climbing community. I think climbers need to do a little less taking and sending and a little more giving and participating in community action. A few individuals have been doing most of the work, while the rest of us have been climbing away unaware that managing the climbing resources requires people and time.

This meeting is the perfect place to find out what is happening and the issues affecting climbing in Squamish. It's also a great place to meet other climbers and swap stories about one of the best ever climbing seasons in Squamish.

Great meeting last Sunday - thanks SAS.
It was a good to hear some of the highlights of the work the SAS has being doing on behalf of climbers this year including:

• Completion of Phase 3 Re-Bolting - putting in new protection bolts on 8 Smoke Bluff climbs, two Murrin Park Climbs and installing 100 new perma-draws in at Chek as well as refurbishing the Daily Planet on the Chief. see SAS post for details.
  
  Providing leadership and advocating for a new Murrin Park loop trail that will go past the new Common Wealth Crag, Quercus Wall and back down by Up Among the Firs and Pet Wall. The trail should be ready for next June. Attention new routers, apparently several unclimbed crags on this trail.
  
  Cleaning up the unregulated camping sites on the Stawamus River. Hats off to the SAS for responding quickly when this issue surfaced last week. The SAS is urging the district and BC Parks to supply more affordable camping. They are also looking for suggestions to avoid this situation next summer.
  
  Finally, SAS president Charlie Harrison is stepping down. Thanks Charlie for all the time and effort you volunteered for the society. Jeremy Smith took up the torch, so the SAS is in good hands. Good luck Jeremy.

About twenty people showed up including board members, so it got me wondering what was everybody doing on a Sunday evening that they were so busy they couldn’t attend? I can understand all those climbers on a road trip down south (lucky buggers) and elsewhere but everybody else? Come on people, the organization can only improve by participation of its members. So renew your membership and if (heaven forbid) you haven’t got one - get on over to the website and sign-up. OK - rant over back to politics, baseball, football or whatever else is on TV.
