Interesting YouTube video: High Art on the Split Pillar

Post by squamish climber » Thu Apr 14, 2011 8:47 am

Came across this the other day. Quite a different take on climbing the Split Pillar - Climbing really can be an art when taken to the level of modern dance. It's also cool as it looks like Julia Barrick-Taff climbs it in bare feet.

Put your art critic hats on and review: Is this art?

Meh. Art shmart.

But major props for climbing the pillar with no shoes, that would hurt...

"Emo" is the first thought that popped into my mind, followed by "marijuana"

I got to belay Julia at the 2nd or 3rd VIMFF when she did a hanging rope dance to open the climbing evening.

In general my take on it is it makes more sense as dance with some climbing techniques added than it does as climbing with some dance added. As climbing-related movement goes it isn't very interesting - too repetitive.

When it comes to swinging around in costumes on the end of a rope, John Candy did it better than Bandaloop ever does:

Fromage.
Though it would have been interesting to see that billowing hunk of fabric from the parking lot.
