Post by squamish climber » Thu Mar 17, 2011 1:32 pm

Local climbers, athletes and coaches are profiled in a story today in the Straight Not content with mere recreation, competition climbers aim to get the sport recognized in the 2020 Summer Olympics

Straight editor, Charlie Smith talks to Jamie Chong, Andrew Wilson, Sean McColl and Vikki Weldon about the current status of the sport and their hopes of where it's heading.

Jamie laments the fact that the federal government has not officially sanctioned competitive climbing. “Right now, Sport Canada doesn’t even recognize climbing as a sport,” Chong said of the federal body, a division of Canadian Heritage. “It is a sport…but the government doesn’t recognize that."

Well done guys and here's hoping that will change and Canadian climbers get the recognition and support to get them on the podium.
