Impressive Link-up by Alex Honnold and Will Stanhope

Post by squamish climber » Wed Aug 04, 2010 9:46 am

Will wrote up on his blog (willstanhope.blogspot.com) the link up he did with Alex Honnold on July 30.

Here is the summary
The Free Grand (with Apron Strings start)
University Wall (with Roman Chimneys)
Northern Lights
Freeway

Approximately 13.5 hours, give or take... we didn't note the exact times for starting and finishing. No falls for Alex or I.
Here's some detail:
-4am Alpine start
- The Free Grand (5.13b) back to the van at 7am
- U Wall (5.12a) with Roman Chimneys (5.11d), back to the van around 11am
- Northern Lights (5.12a), back to the van around 4pm
- Freeway (5.11d) back to the van around 6:30pm

Putting this in context with other Squamish link-ups (correct me if I'm wrong or missing something)

- 1996 Sig Isaac and Luc Mailloux (seconding) link U Wall, Northern Lights and Freeway
- 2004 Tommy Caldwell and Sonnie Trotter climbed The Grand Wall, The Shadow 5.13b and Freeway 5.11d (Grand Slam)
-2006 Sonnie Trotter and Matt Seagal linked The Grand Wall 5.13b, The Shadow 5.13b and the Black Dyke 5.13b.
- (?) Colin Moorhead Freeway (5.11c) Northern Lights (5.12a) and Grand Wall (5.11a, A0)
- 2007 Matt Maddaloni and Paul Cordy (seconding) University Wall (5.12a) to the Roman Chimneys (5.11a), The Northern Lights (5.12a), Freeway (5.11c). 16.5 hours (Triple Crown)
