student research paper help

Post by logie » Mon Mar 15, 2010 7:51 am

My name is Logan Hurd, I am currently a student at the College of the
Rockies in Golden, British Columbia. With the college, I have recently
begun writing a research paper on what attracts tourists to squamish BC.

here's some questions i put together it would be awesome of some of you guys could give me some of your input.

1. What are your top 5 climbing spots in canada?
2. Why squamish for your climbing destination?
3. How would you rate the climbing in squamish comparing it to other spots you’ve visited in Canada?
4. What else besides climbing draws you to squamish?

Hi logan,
I'll help:

I haven't visited a lot of places;
1: 1.squamish 2.bugaboos 3.canmore 4.lake louise 5. Newfoundland

2: Squamish has quantity, and quality climbing and many other activities close by. The long rock season is nice (almost year round) and when it's cold, ice fills the gaps.

3: It's hard to compare different types of rock, and types of climbing, but squamish almost encompasses all. The variety here in squamish (and area) puts it ahead of the others.

4: Skiing touring, mountaineering, mountain biking, and occasionally, waiting in lift lines.

1. Squamish, Skaha, Bugaboos, Newfoundland east/west/south coast. That could be 6 I guess!

2. I live in Squamish so makes it easy to climb there! The long season and multitude of climbing areas is beyond any other place in Canada.

3. For crack climbing, very high up there. The south coast of Newfoundand has superb cracks as well and the granite offers alot more friction but section of rock may have poor quality.

4. Mountain biking, mountaineering, ice climbing (if things freeze in the area) hiking and the quietness of the place compared to Vancouver.
When in doubt....run it out!!!!

1. Squamish 2. Skaha 3. Canmore 4. Lake Louise 5. Bugaboos

2. Great variety, excellent cracks, solid protection, great views often

3. The weather is ok when you live here and can just wait out rain, but for visitors with limited time, i suppose the rain could really suck

4. Mountain biking, sailing, hiking,

Not very original but hope it helps

1) Rockies, Valhallas, Waddington Range, Squamish, Monashees

2) Its just practice for the alpine, the highway, neon signs and a casino makes for a pretty poor backdrop

3) High class, although compared to the great ranges of Europe pretty generic

4) Nothing, I dont even like driving through it and if you park for too long expect your sh*t to be yoinked

I) do you mean, rate the top 5 destinations by desirability, or by the amount of time you spend climbing there?

if the first (desirability): 1) Coast Mountains, 2) Cascades, 3) Squamish, 4) Cirque of the Unclimbables, 5) Baffin

rated by how much time I think about climbing there.

Otherwise

1) cascades including fraser valley/hope, 2) squamish, 3) coast mts, 4) lillooet, 5) skaha

based on how much I actually climb there

II) Why Squamish? It's got it all from boulder problems, sport and trad single pitch to big long routes. it's got a lot of climbs - like 2,000 routes now? There are always new climbs to do so you don't get stuck in a rut of doing the same 10 routes over and over. There are climbers from all over so you can always make new friends, meet old ones or find partners if you need to. Best of all there is very little in the way of pay parking, park fees or other bureaucracy to deal with.

III) It rates pretty highly - it's world class and probably (Bow Valley chest beating for Yamnuska aside) Canada's premier destination and most historic climbing spot

IV) - It's got mountains and parks and stuff. I mean I know there is windsurfing and mountain biking etc but I don't go to Squamish to do that stuff, I go there to climb.

So I'll just comment on what else besides climbing draws you to Squamish...

I've been Living here for a year now and am completely amazed everyday that I see our surroundings. We do live in paradise - just about the only thing Squamish doesn't have is waves for surfing.

What we have:

- Brand new 4 lane highway to Vancouer and Whistler....
- Federal/provincial money being put into our trails Hiking/biking/dirtbiking
- THE PEOPLE are surprisingly cool
- Houses/rent/car insurance is cheaper than the city
- Extra foods sucks, but the other grocery stores are good.
- Festivals - Loggers sports and SERF
- Organized sports such as Soccer/Baseball/Hockey have alot of participants
