rapping off hydro towers

Post by supafly » Tue Sep 02, 2008 11:42 am

rapping directly off a hydro tower.. i.e. no hanger just the rope around on of the "legs" - this is in the bluffs btw.

anyone do it? think it's OK?

the steel pylons have pretty sharpish edges..

I don't do it. I either walk off or rap off an anchor and pick it up later.

it'll be fine. the edges aren't nearly sharp enough (if i'm thinking of the right ones) to cut your rope.

It's been done (use a large radius, like put the rope around the whole leg of the tower rather than a stringer) but there is a small but not zero electrocution hazard and Bc hydro has large signs at the Bluffs parking lot telling you that they might fine you if they catch you doing it. So why do it? None of the Hydro towers is more than a minute's walk from the base of the crag.

Don't do it. Rapping or slinging hydro towers is a serious access problem. Doing so can jeopardize future access to the area. Sure you can do it but should you?

Almost 20 years ago I met someone who'd taken a bad fall and said the lesson to be learned was: don't rap from a hydro tower. I didn't find out what went wrong and looking at them I can't see an obvivous problem and I rapped once myself from one but it wouldn't be my 1st, 2nd, or 3rd choice.

Maybe it was that accident in the late 80s where Paul Kao was rapping from the eyebolt cable on top of True Love/Picket Line and the cable tie failed and he fell 30m and broke his back?
