Bishop

Headin to Bishop for a couple of weeks in October. Have been there once but lookin for some advice. Camping, is the gravel pit the best bet or is there something a little nicer around? Cheap to free being the goal! Also driving....Would I-5 into Oregon then to Cali and Bishop be the best (stole this out of Brendens thread). Any advice on the two would be appreciated.

everytime that I have headed that way I I-5 it till Mt. Shasta in northern cali, and then cut across to Reno and down to bishop this is only a bad plan if there is a lot of snow but given the time of year you are looking to go this route should provide the quickest 18hr route from Van.

As for camping where ever you go great but if you want a place to eat and hang out there is a sweet park in the city that has covered picnic tables and is a chill place to hang out, pretty much across the street from Shat's? Bakery.

I was in Bishop last May and at that time it was still OK to camp on federal land near the Buttermilk boulders; I found a really great site nearby the bouldering. I was supposed to get a fire permit (free from the BLM in town) even for a camp stove.

There are a ton of dirt roads going all over the place near the buttermilks; pick an inviting one and head down it. You will get a 'nicer' spot if you have a 4x4 rather than a car.

As to driving - lots of scenic routes but fastest to head south on I-5, blast over to Tahoe, then south through the Owens valley.

Nice, I didnt realize that you could camp on any BLM land! Also thinkin about a day or 2 at Owens. Have heard good things!

i've done the drive through sacramento/s. lake tahoe and i've also done it over mt shasta. my experience has been that going over mt shasta is about 3 hours shorter

Forget the pit. Camp up in the pinion forest near the upper gorge. There wil be an intersection right before you arrive at the upper gorge. Go left here and take the dirt road 1.6 miles until you see the pine trees. Look for a faint dirt trail on the right. Follow it and find yourself a killer site. Make sure you do this with plenty of light or you will never find it. At 1.5 miles drive real slow and keep those hawk eyes wide open.
You will be well rewarded! Have fun in Bishop...might even see you there.

Just got back. We stayed at the forest. It was free, no toilet though. Make sure you check out the Pauit Palace Casino for the 2.99 breakfast!!!

Nice....how was the climbing with the temps on the hotter side?
I will defiently hit the Casino breakfast. I think that I will also camp at the forest.
