SAS: Comic Rocks Access Update

Post by Tyrone Brett » Thu Aug 10, 2006 5:41 pm

We've been in touch with several Sea to Sky Highway construction liason officers and here’s the current scoop on access to Comic Rocks.
Long term: diagrams actually show a “right in, right out” access point for north-bound traffic in a similar location to the old access point. Traffic coming from the north will have to drive south to Furry Creek and turn around to access the area.
Short term: The recommendation is to park at the Britannia Forest Service Road about a 500 meters to the south (the entrance is abit bumpy- we’re working on that one with highways) and walk along the highway to get to the crag. (park off to the side as much as possible, near the yellow gates). Other various small pullouts were mentioned, including one right at the old access point, but we do not recommend them as they throw the huge queue of traffic off that invariably will follow you up from Furry Creek (and they are tiny, with a big drop off...). Signage for a pedestrian access point was mentioned, but it is unclear where that will be placed: at the Britannia Road or at the old access point.
This is the beta so far; the nature of the project is ever-changing so we will try to keep folks up to date. We are also working on on-sight signage for climbers for this area and others affected now and in the future.
Cheers, Tyrone Brett, Squamish Access Society
