SAS Notice: Current Access to Comic Rocks and Nightmare Rock

These two areas are currently being affected by recent Highway 99 expansion construction.

At Comic Rocks, while the new section of highway adjacent to the old access road has been substantially completed, there are currently CRB's (Concrete Roadside Barriers) preventing access. The Squamish Access Society is currently inquiring as to what provisions are being made to allow access during the ongoing construction and what the final picture will look like when construction is completed. We will post more information on this thread as it is forthcoming.

At Murrin Park, there are currently limitations to access for Nightmare Rock. While the physical resources of the cliff are not in direct danger (except from potential flying debris), blasting has occurred and may be ongoing on some of the roadside boulders and bedrock. It is unclear whether some of the established boulder problems are being affected. Construction crews have posted bulletin boards on the west roadside at the south end and north ends of the work site providing information on blasting. The north-end one states no access during certain time between the dates of the 26th and 28th. Whether that information is up to date is unknown. You may be asked to refrain from entering the area or to leave it if you are already there. We are currently in touch with the area manager to obtain a schedule of access windows and get a better picture of what the final changes will entail.
