the Gorge / Star Chek

Post by Neumann » Sun Apr 23, 2006 7:57 pm

Thinking of heading up to the Gorge this week since I heard that it is now open. I am wondering if there is any new access issues since the rebuilding if the highway. Can I still get to the top of Star Chek?
Thanks.

driving past star check a couple of days ago i saw a cairn by the road where i think starcheck tops out, so you should be safe.

I would still be cautious about climbing at the Gorge. Highways committed to more scaling of blast rock from the cliffs above Gotham City (ie rock fall) this spring - what I don't know is if that is done yet. If not, better to not be climbing there. There is a rebolting program that was ongoing as well to repair damage caused by highway expansion - again I am not sure if it is completed or not. The expectation this winter was that "the area should be fully open and clear of stonefall risk by next spring". The new access trail from the highway to Gotham City and Star Chek is said to be superb, but I recall hearing that with the rebolting program access to Star Chek will not be from above anymore - the new approach is to walk to the base.
I will try to check all of this out asap and confirm the situation.
