What's the best kind of telescopic pole to use for a stick clip (that won't cost me $100)?

just go to a home-crappo or rona or whatever and get a painter's pole...

all stick-clips should thread on fine



BUT, my personal prefence is getting the longest tent pole you can buy, super glueing the stick-clip to the tent pole, then run some 3mm cord from the stick clip down the length of the tent pole (for stability).....its a flimsy system, but its stupid lightweight and great packability

One of my climbing partners is currently using the tent pole. It IS great for packability but agree with Gary, very painful to watch! I'm heading to Smith next week so want the most efficient method possible.

The BEST clip-stick is made by G3 -- Genuine Guide Gear.

They call it a "cheat stick" for "toprope protection placement".

Very sturdy. Long. And the bonus is that it telescopes down to a size that will fit easily on the outside of your pack.

A friend of mine bought it locally (in Squish I believe), I'm sure you could find it thru Google.

If not, let me know and I can ask for the source.

The one down side is that it's a bit pricier than a cheap paint pole.

I believe it's in the $45 range -- the clip portion included.

A couple of times I had to resort to the stick clipping method (Forgotten Wall and Quarry Rock I believe). I actually thought I was pretty clever since I was unaware that people do it all the time. Anyways, I simply found a branch lying around the crag that was long enough to reach to the first bolt, then I put the tip of the stick between the open gate and the nose of the 'biner so once you hook it into the hanger you just yank your stick away and voila! Poor mans stick-clip.

Yup. I literally got the last one they made right from their warehouse in North Vancouver.
It is G3. I can't find another on the net like it. It telescopes to 2.5 feet long.

DUDE! I SOOOOO hate it when that first bolt is like 2.5 feet out of my reach.....its like "dang man!"....i always hate having to take that damn running jump at it with a draw-in-hand
