Squamish makes Top 10

Post by MCpl » Wed Apr 14, 2004 8:17 am

Squamish came in 9th on a 8a.nu list for most popular crags/area.

And some people who have the "Squish" as their backyard, don't like the climbing here. You gotta just shake your head.

It doesn't make me shake my head. Squamish is great for bouldering and incredible for trad climbing but for sport climbing... The hard sport climbing in squamish just isn't fun. No one would make squamish a sport climbing destination. Bouldering yes, trad climbing of course but sport climbing no. Personal opinion of course, and not one that will be changed anytime soon.

Most people have probably entered squamish for their bouldering which is why it makes the top 10.

List off the best sport routes in squamish:
Black water, Yellowbeard, mutation, ill communication, practical horseman, umm...

Granted I haven't climbed any of the new routes at the forgotten wall or the sanctuary but still... I can't imagine inviting friends over from France, or up from colorado to come sport climb in squamish.

I've got to agree with Stretch on this one.
Even though I primarily sport climb in Squamish, I don't think granite lends itself to great sport climbing.
I've climbed at quite a few sport areas in the States, Europe and Asia and Squamish sportclimbing would rank at the bottom of "my" list.
In saying this, I still like Squamish sportclimbing, you just need to be selective of the routes you climb.
And if you've climbed all the good ones, start bouldering or trad climbing, or travel more!

Then this will beg the question: "What is 'good' sport climbing?" or "What makes a sport route 'good'?"

what about all the sport stuff 15 minutes north and south of squish, how does that compare to other places? Thats part of squamish too, er, the general area anyhow.

I think when people refer to Squamish they are encompassing those areas as well (ie Chek, Rogues, Comet Rocks, etc)
