Squamish Mountain Festival 2011

Post by squamish climber » Thu Apr 07, 2011 10:42 am

The dates for this year's festival have been announced: July 13-17 - so mark your calendars.

Here's the link for Squamish Mountain Festival 2011 website.

Nothing much there yet, they say the new website is coming. However the deadline for film submissions to compete at the event is May 15th, so if you got an awesome video in the works get crack'n.

In the meantime anybody want to share some memories, stories or photos from last years fest. Please post up.

Thanks for the reminder.
The SMF is a worthy celebration of our climbing culture and I'm looking forward to it.
We've come a long ways from sleeping in the dirt at Psyche Ledge and hiking into town for a bootlegged case of Uncle Ben's.

The official site and sched are up. Looks very good - out of town speakers include Dean Potter, Cory Rchards and Ed Cooper.

And Squamish local and guide Jasmin Caton kicks things off with Margo Talbot for Oh Canada night. Jasmin will be talking about her trip with Kate Rutherford to Greenland's granite big walls. That will be a don't miss evening.

I was googling the web about the Squamish Mountain Fest and came across this interesting news piece in the Salt Lake Magazine, Utah's bi-monthly glossy mag. It ranked SMF in the top five for Climbing Festivals in the West. We're right up there with Salt Lake's own : Hera Climb4Life - a Black Diamond sponsored festival in September and the well known Red Rock Rendevous.

Here's what the piece said about the SMF: The crags of Squamish attract climbers from all around the globe. Get on board for climbing, bouldering, yoga, a themed party, a film festival, photography contest, clinics, a Dyno comp, and its first ever trail run.

Oh, and I thought the writer had an interesting take on climbing festivals: Climbing fests are like speed dating events where after a ding of a bell, you’ve sampled the lot and usually found yourself a new partner, (and a new water bottle, chalk bag and routes to climb). You’ve also had one hell of a great time. After all, you’re hanging out with a few hundred of your peers, climbing all day and rocking out all night.

Noticed that Dean Potter has been removed from the original lineup. Anybody know why he is no longer coming?
