Squamish election

Post by gearheart » Wed Oct 29, 2008 1:30 pm

The municipal election in Squamish is coming up on Nov. 15. There are advance polls in case it is sunny and dry on Nov. 15 and you would otherwise need to squeeze in one more day on your project before winter, winter road trips etc.

A bunch of useful details are set out here (who can vote, where, etc.):

For those who missed it, there was a recreational issues all-candidates forum last Monday (Oct. 27). It was hosted by SORCA, with questions asked by many of the other local user groups, including the Squamish Access Society, Squamish Trails Society, Squamish Titans (triathlon club), Squamish Dirt Bikers Association, etc. I thought that Catherine Jackson, Patricia Heintzman, Doug Race, Greg Gardner and Corinne Lonsdale all demonstrated a good understanding of climbing issues. Catherine Jackson is actually a climber, so she had a bit of an advantage there.

I think that there are two other all-candidates forums coming up, but are hosted by the Chamber of Commerce and Chief newpaper and will no doubt focus on other issues.

Continuing to have a climbing-friendly municipal council definitely matters - both directly in terms of the state of the smoke bluffs park, and indirectly through them working with BC govt around the Chief, Murrin and Chek.

Get out and vote - as I say, there are advance polls in case it is sunny & dry on election day...
