The Ministry of Transportation and Highways has now announced that the closure will be for five days. The slide area is about 75 metres long, and covered in up to 10 metres of debris.

It doesn't appear that it would be possible to get to Squamish by going to Porteau, leaving a vehicle there, crossing the slide zone, and getting picked up on the other side. The slide covers the entire area from cliff to ocean, including the highway and railway tracks. It looks like significant blasting will be needed to reduce the debris to a manageable size, which suggests that the public won't be allowed in the area while work is under weigh - 24 hours a day, likely.

The last lengthy closure of the Vancouver-Squamish highway that I can remember was in August 1975. There was a large collapse/slide about 2 km south of the current one, that closed the highway for a week.
There've been several short closures, both weather and slide related, but none of similar length for many years.
The Squamish-Whistler highway is another story.
