Re: New Fixed Chain on Broadway

This issue has been the subject of considerable debate in the past, here and elsewhere. It is disturbing that someone would anonymously take such actions without first discussing it and seeking consensus, with e.g. help from the Access Society. Perhaps whoever did this could identify himself, and te...

Re: Recommended approach to Star Chek

Whichever way you approach, it is non-trivial. Not a comfortable 5.8/5.9. At least one experienced climber has been seriously hurt on the scramble down.

And a helmet is a darn good idea on the approach and route, however you get to it.

Re: Poll: Sea to Sky Gondola Proposal

Some interesting numbers, as of today: FOSC E-Petition ipetitions dot com /petition/squamishchief/signatures - 303 have signed the petition, including some couples, so probably 310 or 315 total. - 40 who provide names, and five anonymous (45 of the total), currently live in the Squamish area, and a ...

Re: Smoke Bluffs Guidebook Questions - Help!

Cat Crack - Anyone offically know the deal with the line just right of the crack. There are a few bolts on the slab, but no info has ever surfaced about what this climb is or who put it there.
Who wouldn't want to remain anonymous, having done a ridiculous squeeze job like that?

Re: Crag/Trail Work Suggestions

How about teaming up with the trails society and others, and building a good trail from the Slhanay parking area to the Chief/Slhanay saddle, and then linking up with the existing trails? More or less upgrading the old mountaineers' route. It'd have to be to a good standard, and with BC Parks consen...

Re: BC Retrobolt Fund

Do you mean a bolt/anchor replacement fund? Retrobolting is usually taken to mean adding bolts to existing routes, an often sensitive and sometimes controversial subject.

Re: Upper Apron Projects

Thanks for the caution - maybe a small work party is needed, to get up there and lower the thing to Broadway and into the forest, and perhaps tidy up a few other things there. I brought down all the then loose rocks along Granville Street last spring, but there may be more, plus the bush lines in th...

Friends of the Stawamus Chief (FOSC) now has a FaceBook page.

http://www.facebook.com/FriendsoftheSquamishChief

You can "like" us, read about the issues, learn how you can contribute. It's a fine bit of work by the Friends in Squamish. Hopefully all those interested will have a look.

Re: Here we go again (Squamish Gondola proposal)

Just so that it's clear, Britannia/Goat Ridge and the Chief/Shannon aren't an either/or situation. The Chief proposal should be rejected, and the land reacquired and made part of the Parks so that we don't have this problem every time a developer from Whistler drives by the Chief. Britannia/Goat Rid...

Re: Here we go again (Squamish Gondola proposal)

Thanks, Dave. I sent my views about the proposal to the premier, various politicians, and others on Tuesday. I received a short response from the premier’s office, but that’s all so far. I’ve been encouraging others to learn about this, and state their views. There’s been considerable interest, and ...

Re: Here we go again (Squamish Gondola proposal)

Thanks, Dave. I've had about 30 direct replies to the message I sent on Saturday, about the proposal by Sea to Sky Gondola Corp. The message was sent to over 300 individuals and groups - essentially, every Squamish climber for whom I had an e-mail address, world-wide, every climbers' and conservatio...

Re: Squamish Gondola Proposal – What YOU Can Do

For clarity, and because the forum doesn't allow posts to be edited, at some point the company behind the proposal became Sea to Sky Gondola Corp. It seems likely that the new company is a spin-off of Ground Effects, as the individuals involved seem to be the same. Earlier references to Ground Effec...

Re: Here we go again (Squamish Gondola proposal)

How odd, that developers who are apparently from Whistler would say something like: It is a broader conversation, for sure, but other communities have done it, and to have the broader discussion take place while leaving the Squamish component out of the conversation doesn't seem fair Just how has th...

Re: Here we go again (Squamish Gondola proposal)

The call from the Straight somewhat focused my thinking on this matter, as did recent discussions with a few friends. My apologies that I wasn't more pro-active. I took it that those who should have provided the needed vision and leadership would do so, and was busy with all the usual things, some c...
