Re: The story behind the Rock Climber Carving

Thanks for the details! The story in the 1980 guidebook (page 53): "Just after the [Grand Wall] trail begins a charming sculpture of a climber is visible on a boulder to its right. This was carved by Jack Richardson to commemorate a sixteen man ascent of the Grand Wall in 1969." Jim Campbell's 1985 ...

Re: Here we go again (Squamish Gondola proposal)

Other thoughts, which didn’t fit into the letter: The start of construction coincides with the start of the hiking and climbing season, and it’ll be interesting to see what the reaction is. FOSC surveys last summer indicated that most hikers – and there are 50,000+ a year – hadn’t even heard of the ...

Re: Here we go again (Squamish Gondola proposal)

(Thanks, Dave - it's been a while since I had time to check the forum. The letter was edited somewhat, to fit their 500 word limit. Full text as follows - I don't know why it's putting it in this font.) The recent approval of the gondola project, and start of construction, was a disappointment for a...

Re: an open letter to Anders

Thanks, Tennessee – very kind of you. Someone sent a note mentioning that you’d posted this. And yes, I very much still have a day job, and other responsibilities. I thought I’d mostly given up climbing-related advocacy, apart from my graffiti-removal fetish. It was a bit of a slog, and rather disa...

Re: The direct slab finish on Centerfold?

The original descent trail was to the south, then back around under the powerlines and along the base. It's probably now overgrown, if not covered in slash.

Squamish Culture & Heritage Festival (November 23rd & 24th)

The Squamish Culture & Heritage Festival will be at Quest University, on Friday November 23rd and Saturday November 24th. (November is a good time of year for events like this, eh?) Some of the more interesting events, to me anyway: Steve Quane (Quest University Canada): Sea to Sky geology Hans Bran...

Re: Stawamus River climbers camp mess

Good work, team! There's a history of squatting in the Squamish area, mostly by non-climbers. Climbers did occasionally camp in the boulders or where the campground is now from 1961 on, sometimes for several weeks, but there were some long-term squatters at the campground in the later 1980s and earl...

Re: New Fixed Chain on Broadway

Good grief! I was hardly suggesting that commercial climbers (including more than just guides) would install such things for their own use. However, experience in other areas suggests that they often do so for the benefit of their clients, and to facilitate their operations.

Re: New Fixed Chain on Broadway

Squamishmonkey, did you remove the chain and bolts shown in the photo, and whatever else may have been placed? If so, what else was done to tidy up? Perhaps responsible parties such as the Access Societies and BC Parks could discuss the proliferation of convenience anchors (bolts, chains, ropes) on ...

Re: Film Crew Seeking Guide

I can't say anything much about locations, helpers, and so on. You will likely need a licence or permit to work in Stawamus Chief Provincial Park or Little Smoke Bluffs municipal park, though. Commercial activity and such in both parks is regulated. There may be possible locations outside the parks,...

Re: Pineapple Peel Restoration Project

Thanks! The third pitch wanders quite a lot - up and a bit left to a bolt, then way to the right to a second bolt, then a bit up and way back left to the bottom of the wide groove. It's reasonably cleaned, which should help with routefinding. It would probably be possible to go straight up from the ...

Re: New Fixed Chain on Broadway

What has happened to these anchors and chains? Still there, removed, or? Has anyone got photos of them? I'm quite opposed to fixed chains, ropes and the like along Broadway. However, there may be something to be said for fixed anchors at the start of the climb down to Diedre, essentially at the sout...

Re: New start to Calculus Crack

Kris: Does anyone know who cleaned up the slab and low angle crack above what most people consider Calculus crack? Is this the original finish to South Arete? Originally SA climbed a crack to a small ledge just above an overhang, where you belayed. Then up a short crack to climber's right on the le...

Re: New start to Calculus Crack

What's wrong with swinging in trees? :D Some argue that it isn't a true Squamish route unless at some point you've relied on trees or shrubberies for progress, anchors, or both.
