Re: Squamish Gondola Proposal – What YOU Can Do
Noelle, OK by me if you borrow from what I wrote - although often it's better to put things in your own words, at least for part. Politicians and civil servants get no end of "form letter" style e-mails from partisans, so something personalized may get more attention. It seems very doubtful that the...

Squamish Gondola Proposal – What YOU Can Do
There is a new proposal to build a tourist gondola through the heart of Stawamus Chief and Shannon Falls Provincial Parks (the “Parks”), at Squamish. It is by Ground Effects Developments Inc. The proposal would have substantial impacts on the Parks. It still needs some government approvals, in parti...

Re: Here we go again (Squamish Gondola proposal)
Time is growing short, but I remain sure that climbers, if they can unite themselves and work with others, can at least get this proposal moved to a more suitable location, outside the parks. The voice of climbers in this should be the Climbers' Access Society, as it is an established group which le...

MEC 2012 Board Election - Please Vote!
Mountain Equipment Co-op’s 2012 election for its board of directors has begun. All MEC members should get informed, and vote. It only takes a few minutes to participate in your democracy. I am one of the candidates, and encourage you to vote for me. There are thirteen candidates running for election...

Re: Here we go again (Squamish Gondola proposal)
Can someone provide an update as to this? That is: 1. The stage the proposal is at. 2. What political approvals have been obtained, and need to be obtained. 3. Important background stuff, like what they would actually do, when and how they'd build the thing, finances, and so on. IIRC, there is a Squ...

Re: Occupy The Smoke Bluffs Day
We - Hamish Fraser, Jim Brennan, my brother, and I - occupied the Little Smoke Bluffs on Saturday, per BK's request. No sign of BK. The bluffs were occupied. When I went by the Occupy Vancouver event in front of the Art Gallery, at 9 AM, there were bunches of cops standing around drinking coffee, bu...

Re: Flying gear, flying rocks = no fun on Rutabaga
Sometimes a climber who drops or dislodges something isn't aware that she/he has done so, or that the rope has knocked something off. It's not always apparent. If you climb beneath others, you hope they'll be careful - they may not know that you're there, of course - but you take your chances.

Re: Heads up: Traffic delays due to GrandFondo race
The Vancouver - Whistler cycle races of the early to mid 1970s use to create monumental fusterclucks on the highway. The road was then much narrower and windier, especially the Alice Lake - Garibaldi Lake turnoff section. 100 to 200 mostly serious riders, even though they started quite early, create...

Re: Multi Pitch Politeness when stuck behind slow folks.
A really slow party which refuses to let fast climbers pass, at a reasonable belay station, is extremely rude. Ummm, I'm afraid not. A slower party may have chosen to get an earlier start because they don't want the risk of others climbing above them, and dropping rocks or equipment on them. If you...

Re: loose rocks at top of penny
It would take a lot of concrete. Not really an appropriate solution, given the topography. It reminds me of the little Dutch boy and the dyke. And of course it's a park - you'd want to ask the Little Smoke Bluffs committee before doing anything so dramatic. An annual spring cleaning/sweeping of clif...

Re: The story behind Squamish route names
1980, IIRC. We had been walking along the top and below B&F for several years, without paying it much attention. A low angle rather vegetated cliff. There were then no houses on the top, or anywhere near - the closest were well to the east or south, until about 1992. Climbers sometimes camped there.

Re: loose rocks at top of penny
Possible, but I suspect it would fill up fairly quickly - at least, the sort of wall that might be appropriate and practical there. You might have to empty it every spring, or more often. A lot of stuff gets washed down there.

Re: loose rocks at top of penny
Due to topography, this is a perennial problem for that part of the cliff, and others. No easy solution, as there's a new 'crop' of rocks every spring, and after heavy rains. Possibly increased traffic on the trail leading to the top of this cliff is also increasing erosion - once you disturb the ve...
