Re: Apron Descent Hand Line Needs Replacement
No, I'm referring to the rappel line to climber's right (west) of Rock On. I believe it was established a few years ago, more or less on the line of "Bad Pants Party". We did the usual rappel starting just over from the top of Rock On to Broadway, and then Kris and Reuben rappelled and I walked.

Re: Apron Descent Hand Line Needs Replacement
After Kris, Reuben and I explored the lower half of Squamish Buttress on Tuesday, we did an experiment. We rappelled to the top of the Apron - a point just south of Baldwin Ledge. They then rappelled via the relatively new rappel route into South Gully. I walked down. Kris and Reuben did two double ...

Squamish Buttress - Second Ascent (?)
The probable second ascent of the lower half of Squamish Buttress was done on August 26th, 2014, by Kris Wild, Reuben Shelton, and me, partly as research for the history project. The first ascent was in May 1959 by Hank Mather, Fred Beckey and Don Claunch (Gordon). They named the climb "South Arete"...

Re: Apron Descent Hand Line Needs Replacement
There's much to be said for using the original descent route, which is more enjoyable and perhaps safer. Essentially, where you emerge from the forest, go a bit left (facing downhill), and rock hop and scramble down through the boulders. There are some faded bits of orange paint to help show the way.

Vehicle breakins - Garibaldi Lake/Black Tusk trailhead
There's a report of numerous break-ins, perhaps 25 or more, at the parking lot for the trail to Garibaldi Lake and Black Tusk. All vehicles having windows smashed, with theft of valuables from some. Such things seem to happen in waves, so keep your eyes peeled at all trailheads in the area, and don'...

Re: Squamish Mountain Festival Coming mid-July
Thanks for another good festival! The history of these festivals is longer than some may know. AFAIK, the first climbers' festival in Squamish was in 1986, for the 25th anniversary of the ascent of the Grand Wall. It was organized by John Howe and friends. There were are variety of events, speakers ...

Re: Logging planned above Squaw/ Olson creek
There may be other aspects to this question that should be considered. It may be in the best interests of Squamish, climbers, and the Park, that logging resume in both upper Olesen Creek and, when the time comes, in upper Shannon Creek. Perhaps limited logging, using the best modern techniques and w...

Re: Slab Alley Restoration Project
Sorry that the above photos have vanished. They were stored on a photohosting site, and either due to inadvertence or clumsiness, the account seems to have gotten cancelled. Anyway, just reporting that Slab Alley had its annual spring cleaning - particularly the traverse crack on the second pitch, w...

Re: Frank Baumann in fatal single vehicle accident
This is very sad news indeed. Frank was very active in B.C.’s climbing, mountaineering and backcountry ski communities from the 1960s on, and made a number of significant ascents in southwest B.C. and on the Stawamus Chief. Perhaps his most notable climb was the first ascent of Warbler Ridge on Moun...

Re: New Free Route in North Walls
Congratulations! Monday must have offered ideal conditions for the climb. Hopefully not too many Higgs' bosons around, either.

Re: Climbing at Squamish: The First 50 Years (History Projec
Work continues on this project, and indeed seems to be speeding up. It takes some time and effort to collect together journal and magazine articles, other documents, photos, and so on, and get them organized. And even more to visit and interview people, and record the interviews for archival purpose...

Re: Here we go again (Squamish Gondola proposal)
(Part 1) Thanks to FrankB for the helpful information. It is unfortunate that the project never underwent the transparent, independent public scrutiny it ought to have had. The Ministry of Environment acted as though its role is to facilitate development in provincial parks, rather than to protect a...

Re: Here we go again (Squamish Gondola proposal)
Thanks to FrankB for raising some very important issues. For background, the forest road into upper Shannon Creek watershed was built in the 1960s. Logging occurred there in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, and the road was usually driveable before, during and for some time after logging occurred. Most ...

"benny": Do you have any personal, business, financial or other connection with the developers? Do you live in Squamish, and if so how long have you lived there? You're presumably aware that the Stawamus Chief and Shannon Falls are provincial parks, with national if not international attributes? Giv...

Re: South Apron Closed: Rock Fall Hazard - until further not
Hopefully the news will get out quickly, especially with southern visitors for the 4th July weekend. It's amazing that that little tree stopped the block shown. Trundling the block shouldn't be a problem, once the situation is assessed and the area cleared of vehicles, climbers and pedestrians. Stab...
