Re: Block on Banana Peel
Seriously, nobody should hesitate to express concerns about a matter like this- better to do an assessment and try and quantify the risk rather than risk having someone killed. PM me if you want to express a concern privately.

Re: Block on Banana Peel
What goes up due to orogeny (mountain building caused by plate tectonics) must eventually come down.
Of course, we could all move to Manitoba.

Re: Block on Banana Peel
I plan to visit the site over the next few days and do an assessment and advise B.C. Parks if there is an unacceptable problem.
But rockfall will always be an inherent risk on the Chief. Of course, I'd die happy if something happened.

Re: Poll: Sea to Sky Gondola Proposal
I always thought the Lapworth idea was brilliant but I understand there was a couple of concept killers: 1) construction cost sky high. 2) abysmal location presence The two combined equals risk off the chart, then there is the impossibility of a gondola above hydro lines, something that eliminates ...

Re: Here we go again (Squamish Gondola proposal)
I took a drive up the Shannon Creek road to see first hand how construction of the Sea to Sky Gondola is proceeding; here are a few pictures and comments. The top station of the Gondola (880 m elevation) is about an 11 km drive from Highway 99 via the Mamquam, Stawamus, and the Shannon Creek Forest ...

Re: Poll: Sea to Sky Gondola Proposal
As a long term Squamish Local, climber and business owner I would like to say that I am in complete favour of the Gondola. I want our town to become a Natural Attraction not just for the fit and able outdoor enthusiasts but for everyone. I can't wait to bring my Parents and Grandparents to the top ...

Re: Here we go again (Squamish Gondola proposal)
That would be really nice, a parking area at the Habrich spur. I think its worth remembering that the Stawamus road was gated at Mamquam for many years recently, so just being able to drive to the blockade is an improvement. They were actually giving out tickets for driving the bypass at the gate. ...

Re: Here we go again (Squamish Gondola proposal)
Frank B(Bauman?), Baumann (two "n's"). Thanks for your post and alerting the climbing community on this issue. First a disclaimer, I have never been on the Shannon Falls FSR or hiked or climbed Habrich, Sky Pilot or on Goat Ridge but I would sure like to get up there one day. So my knowledge of his...

Re: Here we go again (Squamish Gondola proposal)
As a matter of interest, the proponents told me that they need the existing FSR maintained for their operation (post construction) and it would be open to the public. In other words, if you don't want to ride the lift you can drive, which is a better situation than at present. I haven't had much ti...

Re: Here we go again (Squamish Gondola proposal)
They still won't give up that hoary old nonsense about the Chief being "the world’s second largest granite monolith". It's tiresome, almost reedonkulous. The chamber of commerce or tourism bureau or something seems to have come up with the absurd claim decades ago, and continue to embarrass themsel...

Re: Here we go again (Squamish Gondola proposal)
My take on the gondola proposal. First, contrary to an earlier comment, I had nothing to do with the original Chief gondola proposal; quite the contrary, I was, and am still, not in favour of building a gondola in the vicinity of the Chief or Shannon Falls; the visual aesthetics are just not right. ...
